The economic viability of buildings depends not only on their production and utilization costs, but also on their cost-efficient operation. In order to enable the sensible and conscious use of economic resources over the lifetime of a building, LCCs serve as an integral part of planning processes for evaluating planning solutions and selecting the best solution from the point of view of the building life cycle. The more regularly and earlier in the planning process life cycle cost calculations are carried out and communicated to those involved in planning, the greater the chance of achieving economically optimized buildings in the long term.

Those involved in the planning process should therefore regularly consider the possible follow-up costs of their design and execution variants at an early planning stage. As part of building certifications, input parameters are defined in order to make the economic efficiency of buildings comparable. For calculations that are independent of certification, the parameters can also be determined on a project-specific basis.
